Broken Hill ~ Desert Sand Motor Inn

Day 2 : Broken Hill - Menindee - Broken Hill
An early start this morning. Today we head to the River Town of Menindee which was once a major Port on the Mighty Darling River. We will explore the Wetlands of the Lakes System upon the celebrated River Lady Cruise where there are more species of birds than in Kakadu. Lunch will be at Maidens Hotel. You will also hear about the ill-fated Bourke and Wills expedition. We will look at historic Kinchega Woolshed for a glimpse into Australian pastoral history and imagine the heyday of this place. In ninety-seven years of operation, six million sheep were shorn here. Then its time to travel back to Broken Hill, for a rest before dinner. (B L D)

Day 3 : Broken Hill - Broken Hill
This morning we board the coach and make our way to the Sculpture Symposium - The Living Desert (12 beautiful sandstone sculptures situated on one of the highest points of the area). Next we visit the Silver City Art Centre and Mint, housing original painting by local artist Peter Andrew, Broken Hill mineral display, and the ‘Big Picture’ the world’s largest canvas painting ~ 100m in length and 12m high. Lunch time is upon us in the city centre at own cost. Continuing our days sightseeing we visit the Royal Flying Doctor and learn about the organisation and view the aircraft. Our last stop today is Whites Gallery and Mine Museum before returning to the motel. (B D)

Day 4 : Broken Hill - Silverton - Broken Hill
This morning we travel out to Australia’s hollywood outback town, Silverton. Silverton is an interesting little dot on the NSW map, population of around 40 and is situated 25kms north-west of Broken Hill (any further west and you’d be in South Australia!). The people here are friendly, quirky and are the heart and soul of this living, breathing part of Australia’s history. Touring includes the Umberumberka Reservior, Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout and the Silverton Gaol and even a gander at the Silverton Hotel before returning to the Broken Hill for lunch (own cost). After lunch, our first visit will be to the famous Pro Hart Gallery to view a collection of the late artist’s paintings and sketches. Pro Hart was an artist across many forms, from drawing and sketching to the famed landscapes and narrative paintings of his heyday. We take time to browse awhile and enjoy the passions he loved. Our last stop of the day is to take time to visit the Line of Load Miners Memorial before we return to the motel. (B D)

Day 5 : Broken Hill - Adelaide
This morning we pack the coach and make our way home from Broken Hill, stopping for lunch at Burra (supplied). We arrive back in Adelaide at approx. 5.00pm with comfort stops along the way. (B L)
