Day 2 : Leigh Creek - Fossils - Leigh Creek
Located in the Ediacara Hills on the edge of the Flinders Ranges, this is South Australia’s newest national park, opening to the public in April 2023. Back before dinosaurs, the Pangea supercontinent, and even re-runs of Friends, the Flinders Ranges were covered by a shallow sea. Conditions were just right for an explosion of life, and the marine creatures that inhabited the region left their imprint in the rocks that later formed the ranges.  This unique three-hour tour includes an accredited guide and vehicle, interactive experiences at the Nilpena Visitor Precinct and access to the internationally significant Nilpena Fossil Fields. A truly unique experience. Upon Compleation of the tour we have our lunch. We depart Nilpean and make our way to Beltana. Beltana has a diverse cultural heritage, with significance to people of Aboriginal, Afghan and European descent. The Kuyani people, an Aboriginal language group within the Adnyamathanha people, have lived in this region for thousands of years. The Beltana Spring on Warrioota Creek provided a reliable water source for the Kuyani people. Afghani cameleers played a critical role in the region’s early European settlement, bringing supplies in on camel trains to arid outback areas unsuited to horses and bullocks. Beltana’s heyday of European settlement was in the late 1800s, when mining of copper, silver, lead and coal in the surrounding areas boosted the town’s population to around 400 people. We take time to look at some of the old Historical buildings and Cemetery. We make our way back to Leigh Creek for a well-earned rest before dinner. (B L D)

Day 3 : Leigh Creek - Blinman - Leigh Creek
After a cooked breakfast we make our way to Brachina Gorge, This spectacular gorge meanders its way through sharp sawtooth ridges of resistant quartzite. The Gorge was once used as a pass through which bullock teams pulled their loads and is now a favourite picnic and camping area. Brachina” derived from the Aboriginal word ‘vachina’, meaning cranky, refers to a mythical argument between birds over a grind stone. And continuing to Blinman for lunch. After lunch we travel to Parachilna via the Parachilna gorge, it cuts through jagged desert gorges and this area of the Flinders Ranges is noted for its harsh, spectacular colours and its raw beauty. Traveling back towards Leigh Creek we take time to have a look at the Aroona Dam. Aroona Dam was once the key water source for the former coal mining town. The dam is no longer used as a water supply, with an alternative source in place, but it remains an important recreation space and Sanctuary with pectacular views and peaceful surrounding. Arriving at Leigh creek with time to freshen up before dinner. (B L D)
